Double Chin

Introduction

Excess fat is the nightmare of anyone with a passion for beauty, and a plump double chin is the arch-enemy of those who cherish their appearance. Sporting a well-rounded double chin, besides feeling soft to the touch, does little to enhance one's facial aesthetics; in fact, it tends to make the entire visage appear heavier and bulkier. Coupled with an ill-defined jawline, a double chin not only appears cumbersome but can also add an oily, aged aspect to one's appearance. Regardless of body weight, the burden of a double chin is one that beauty cannot endure.

Types of Double Chin

While medically referred to as "submental fat," a double chin doesn't discriminate between the overweight and those with a svelte physique. Even individuals with a standard body type or lean build can suddenly find themselves with a double chin, as this stubborn fat is among the most challenging to reduce. Double chins are primarily categorized as fat-based or sagging-based, but they can also be influenced by a receding chin or a short neck.

Causes of a Double Chin

The origins of a double chin are not solely rooted in the accumulation of fat under the neck and jawline but are influenced by several factors:

  • Local Fat Accumulation: Fat-based double chins are primarily the result of localized fat buildup in the platysma muscles, typically stemming from overall obesity.

  • Extended Periods of Smartphone Use: In today's tech-driven world, the ever-present smartphone has led to chronic neck flexion, shoulder discomfort, and also neck muscle underuse. This, in turn, results in localized fat misplacement and sagging skin, not only leading to a double chin but also contributing to neck wrinkles over time.

  • Skin and Muscle Sagging due to Ageing: Similar to skin and muscle changes occurring throughout the body, the skin and muscles in the neck region lose elasticity as we age, causing the jawline to become less distinct. The dual effects of gravity and aging lead to the inevitable appearance of a double chin. However, this type of double chin is not formed by fat accumulation but rather results from sagging and aging of the skin.

  • Round Face or Short Chin: While a round face or a short chin may impart a youthful and adorable look, it may fail to provide adequate support for the skin and fat of the lower jaw due to an insufficiently developed chin. As a result, individuals with naturally round faces or short chins are more prone to developing double chins.

  • Genetic Predisposition: Research suggests that if a family history includes double chins, then one may be genetically predisposed to developing a double chin.

Treatments

For those with a naturally short or receding chin, hyaluronic acid chin injections can instantly provide definition to the chin. By enhancing the chin's length and contour, these injections offer better support to the sagging skin of the lower jaw, effectively concealing the double chin. We only use hyaluronic acid products from the Juvederm range, which are certified by the U.S. FDA and CE, tailoring the product model to the specific treatment requirements.

Fat Dissolving Injections

Ideal for fat-based double chins, fat-dissolving injections are a non-surgical, localized fat reduction solution. These injections contain a laboratory-made deoxycholic acid solution that disrupts the cell walls of fat cells, leading to the liquefaction of localized fat deposits. Subsequently, the body metabolizes and eliminates this liquefied fat. While effective, this method is most suitable for individuals with localized fat accumulation and not for those with overall obesity.

Soft Thread Lift (PDO)

Suitable for sagging and loose double chins, PDO thread lift provides immediate skin-tightening results for double chin reduction. This minimally invasive treatment involves the insertion of soluble, absorbable PDO protein-lifting threads into the fascia layer of the neck skin. These threads lift and reposition sagging skin while offering instant visible effects. They enhance the jawline definition and help counteract the sagging and drooping of the double chin. The implanted protein-lifting threads are gradually metabolized and absorbed by the skin over approximately six months. However, once embedded beneath the skin, these threads continue to stimulate the production of more collagen and elastin in the dermal layer, rejuvenating the skin and combating the sagging double chin.
